To whom it may concern;

I am writing to note that my car was broken into on Friday, February 13, 2004, sometime between 5pm and 10pm, at the Parking lot located behind the Coffee Time at the Southeast corner of Dundas St. E and Mutual St.

When I got into my car, I noticed my car was not as I left it, with the empty ashtray on the passenger-side seat. I immediately searched the car and found no other damage or theft.

Although no items of any value were taken from the car, approximately $10 of change was taken from the car (from the ashtray located in the armrest).

There is also no damage to the car. It appears that the offending person pried the window on the front passenger-side open on the left-hand side and lifted it out of its rubber holdings, which gives enough space for what I would suspect an arm or another tool, which would open the door.

I have already reported this situation to the police, and while there is no damage done to the car and a negligible amount taken from my car, please be aware that I will not be using your parking facilities in the near future.

Sincerely,

Jason Wesley

Thankfully it wasn't any worse than that. But I sure ain't using that parking place again >.

Yeah. No matter; it wasn't much anyhow, and I found not a scratch on the car.

You wouldn't know it was broken into unless you were told where the window had been popped out, now.

There aren't many good parking places down there. However, letters to them won't really do much, as they'll never lose money. Downtown parking is gold, regardless of safety.

I would, however, write to your car manufacturer on how you can prevent another crafty fellon on breaking in again. Your car should not be so easy to get into without smashing a window (which then alerts attention).

See, my mom's been broken into down there before, so it's not like I'm talking out my ass.

Every car is that easy to break into. They're designed that way for people who are "officially" allowed to break in - such as the tow truck guy who helps you get your keys when you locked them in your car - are able to. In fact, there is an official registry of people who have purchased the legitimate tools, though like the gun registry, it means precisely squat.

It doesn't surprise me that the Gun Registry and this "Tool Registry" thing are useless. Remember the debacle that occured when the Government said that every gun would have to be registered? Is it still underfunded and mismanaged?

Good idea; I'll give GM a ring and see what they can suggest (short of adding an alarm system). Thanks ^_^

Yeah. Happy Friday the 13th to me. :\

Ah well, at least they didn't steal anything more. $10 is nothing compared to a $200 repair bill.

0-o oh no~~

The thing is, there's a big ol' sign in parking lots indemnifying themselves from any responsibility for any damage or theft of your car or its contents. So they'll look at your letter, give it a one-fingered salute and wipe their fat asses with it. Sorry to hear about it, though. People are really screwy. I'm amazed they didn't rip the audio out while they were there.

What was strange is that they didn't steal anything more than the change - and even with that, they didn't take all of it, there was still a number of lesser coins in that holder-like divider.

It's not like I didn't know about the "we only lease you the parking spot, we are not held responsible for any lost, stolen or damaged items" which is a catch-all for the businesses. It's written on every parking lot in Toronto.

Chris actually mentioned something like that yesterday - a store that says "Leave your bags at the front counter" but also says "We assume no responsibility for lost or stolen items" has an implication that "We don't trust you enough to not steal, but we also take no responsibility for your bag while it's in our possession".

Someone should be taking responsibility.

*ponders the idea of a parking garage that actually takes care of the cars... wonders if anyone would actually want that for a nominal fee*

Agreed. ^_^ I'm finding new parking locations.

I should take some time and wander downtown and see what the "Green P" Parking charges.

Thank goodness for no damage, but . . . that sucks anyway. :/

(And wow, I've *just* noticed that the userpic you used on this post moves--when I was using IE primarily I had so many things disabled that nothing like that worked.)
