So, after seeing the Nintendo and Sony press conferences... well, this entire year seems to be rather underwhelming. Nintendo showed off some more minigame compilations and ther "Wii Motion Plus" add-on, and Sony went on about their games and said that while they weren't doing well now, they'll get a good foothold soon, just as the PS1 and PS2 did. (So, we're to wait a bit...?)

I'm rather surprised, actually. Nothing explosive, nothing overly impressive. Lots of "casual" games and no big-name products (well, nothing that caught my attention, anyhow). I guess life as usual, though I'd love to see that Harmonix Press Party with The Who... :)

I think a lot of the wind is out because 3rd parties announce their stuff whenever they feel like it, so there's nothing left but first party stuff to come out. I mean, Sony's stuff was largely well known beforehand, and Nintendo's was... Well... You know how I feel about that add on :p

Even Microsoft's FFXIII announcement turned out to be less shocking since representatives from Square say that FF XIII won't get a simultaneous release and this is what Square said from their booth:
"Final Fantasy XIII will first be released in Japan and then development / translation will start on the English version. Then development will start on the Xbox 360 version."

So overall, everything's pretty underwhelming, which isn't a big surprise. The only good thing I guess, is that we get to see later builds of things like Mirror's Edge, which is making me drool all over myself. Yup. I want you to have that picture in your head.

Surprisingly, a lot of time on G4's E3 coverage is being devoted to Sony.

I hate casual gaming now with even more a passion than ever before, which actually wasn't that much before this year's E3. I watched a bit of Microsoft's press conference and man...while I've always hated hearing executives and people who obviously don't play video games talk about the subject matter, this one was especially cringe-worthy. "social entertainment" is officially the phrase that must be banned for the rest of the year.

There was some good news from the event, though - my Rock Band instruments are compatible with Guitar Hero: World Tour! Hooray! That and Metal Slug 7 is still Metal Slug, and thus really fun.

Yeah the Nintendo conference was pretty terrible. There biggest announcement was basically a patch to their motion hardware that has never performed as well as developers or users expected. That said at least the wiimote's Heisenberg uncertainty principle will be gone and it will be able to measure fast movement and orientation/tilt at the same time from now on... in games that support it... which may be few and far between...

I think this may be a harder sell for Nintendo then the balance board. Casual players probably aren't aware of the wii-motes issues so it may look like Nintendo is trying to sell them something they already have.

But honestly what I really wanted was a damn hard drive solution so I can start downloading wii-ware and virtual console titles again.

...Crappy E3's make me cranky apparently :P
