From what Phil's told me about the movie, you shouldn't have a hard time understanding what's going on - even if you've never seen the series before. I guess the first part of it is pretty much a summary of what happened in the series to bring everyone up to speed on what's happened.

As for what it is about....I think the movie is basically the ending of the series. Since Firefly was cancelled about halfway through it's first season, they weren't able to finish up the storyline. I'm pretty sure with the movie they're now able to tie up many of the loose ends and questions revolving around some of the different characters.
