KitKat is experiencing an unusual spike in Japan, but it's because Japanese students are purchasing them for good luck.
Nestle's chocolate bar sounds very similar to a popular Japanese expression, "Kitto Katsu", which roughly translates as "I hope you will win". As it is currently exam time in Japan, parents and students are purchasing them (and its many different Japan-only variations, such as green tea, passionfruit, and lemon-cheesecake) and giving them as good-luck gifts.
