Ok, I was fine with Funimation renaming Detective Conan to Case Closed, due to legal reasons. I was ok with them renaming the characters in the English dub so they could put it on network television, although I have a feeling that will bite the writers in the ass when they come to later episodes that use wordplay on the character's names. They can't just do a cop-out and say "Well, my real name in Japan is Shinichi, not Jimmy..."

But, Anime On DVD reports that the Viz translation for Case Closed was going to keep the original names, but now it's changing to use the English-translated names. Again, I get this feeling that there will be some major problems with wordplays.

See, I know that Detective Conan uses a lot of plays on words, some English, some Japanese. I watched the sixth movie recently (I think that it was called Countdown to Heaven), and near the end of the movie, two kanji symbols are revealed, and when they are transposed (is that the correct word for "swapped"?) it reveals the final location. How are they going to translate that into English?

I'd like to support the companies and purchase the series, but at this point in time, with a 300+ episode run, and Funimation releasing them Dragonball-style at 3 episodes a disc, I can't see myself picking that up. Nor can I see myself picking up the manga, as it's going to use the English names. :\ I might look at the manga, but I'm not going to be able to tug away that thought that the script's been rewritten to work around their names. O.o I might pick up those ultra-mega-packs of bootlegs, but even then, I don't like doing that. Maybe it's time to wait for a while.

(Speaking of which, Central Park Media recently released the whole series of World of Narue as a Brick, right off the bat. No individual releases. I wonder why they did that. I'd prefer that Conan Case Closed did that...)
