I think at some point I had admired Video Game Console programmers over PC programmers, as it seems that almost every game that comes out on the PC has patches abound that are almost necessary to get even before loading the game for the first time. (Some patches, I can understand - better framerates, newer drivers for new video cards, but I'm referring to patches that are used to fix in-game mechanics, like weapon stats, or item locations - things that are necessary to continue.) PC games, over the past few years, have been rushed out the door and patches handed out like they were bonuses (which in fact, they really should have shipped with the original game), just so the companies could get the game out the door for critical dates (like Christmas.)

With Consoles, there are no patches and no second chances. Unless the system comes with a hard drive and free downloads for patches (i.e. XBox), there should be no bugs in a game at all. (There shouldn't be bugs in any product, period. Microsoft, you hear me?) Patches can't be applied to physical discs, and recalling all the discs to fix bugs would pretty much kill any chance of turning a profit.

Sadly, today I have come across a game that has "Level A" glitches (ones that prohibit correct playing of a game) in the Retail version. (Geez, I'm sounding like I test games for a living - now that would be fun, I bet). The glitch is for Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy.

As it stands, I was playing as the Mummy. I'm allowed to save at a point and then immediately walk through a door and continue on with the game. I got out of the Mummy part and got to the Sphinx point, and got killed. (I really should remember when I get back to the Sphinx levels, I always get killed. :\ ) So, I return to my last saved point (as the Mummy), and for some reason the door I just sauntered through last time is closed.

I couldn't figure out what the problem was, and I couldn't see any levers or something that I missed. I figure I had seen a cutscene which opened the door, but that was my "old" game (the first time I played through the level).

So I go to the FAQs page on GameFAQs. Go click on the "PS2" version and search for how many times the word "Glitch" appears in the text.

-_-

I have to restart my game from the beginning. That's like 5 hours into the game, too. Maybe this time I'll be faster. *shrug*

Just a warning to those who are going to play Sphinx in the near future.
