Who says spelling matters? Read the following paragraph straight through without stopping.

Acocdrnig to an Cmabrigde Uinervtisy sutdy, the oredr of letetrs in a wrod dosen't mttaer, the olny thnig thta's iopmrantt is that the frsit and lsat ltteer of eevry word is in the crcreot ptoision. The rset can be jmbueld and one is stlil able to raed the txet wiohtut dclftfuiiy. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe. Pertty amzanig, huh?

This has been showing up *everywhere* lately. O_O I saw it on rec.music.tori-amos a few days ago, and then it got handed out in class this morning for fun.

I'll use the following example that was brought up on my writing list:

f....k

Yes, folks, it's firetruck.

Just because your mind is filling in a blank, doesn't mean it's correct. So yeah, spelling still counts.

But "f...k" is different from "fcuk" or "feuticrrk", it's filling in the blank vs. the letters jumbled in a different order.

I wonder. Does the number of spaces make the word any less dirty-minded? i.e. f.......k vs f..k

Hm. I don't think this is really about spelling, but more about the arrangement of the letters. This might be partially attributed to the Internet and IRC, where mispellings are common when people type rapidly and hit several keys at the same time.

(although, admittedly, I can't see "firetruck" in that top spelling... that's probably why I'm bad at jumbled-word puzzles.)

But I understand your point - spelling is very important. Ohtriwse we get a lwoer lveel of ctncmpeoey. :P
