It's been a while since I talked about anything other than work, so I figured now would be a good day to do so. I've been playing through the Portal 2 Commentary track, and while I'm not big on their decision to remove the option to save (meaning you could miss out on tracks if you decide not to play each chapter in one sitting), the technobabble that they're spouting this time isn't as amusing or thought-provoking as I thought it would be (i.e. "The TV screens were initially not breakable, but they thought it was neat, so now they are")... I'd much prefer to just have a bonus track that unlocks once you play through the game, and gives you a pseudo-video of all the little bits rather than playing through it again. Though admittedly, I'm not rushing through it like I was the first go-through, since I bought it on Day One and didn't want to be spoiled (though I was totally spoiled on Portal 1 before I even purchased it).

I also picked up Solatorobo since it's from a small publisher (XSEED) so I worry that I won't be able to find it if I didn't buy it right away, and I figure I'll start playing it eventually, but I haven't felt like playing the DS at home when I have two computers and two consoles. However, I mused that I almost wish I worked at another COBS location so that I could get a couple of hours of not-driving to read books or play DS games, and [livejournal.com profile] rakarr suggested I go back and play make-believe, so maybe after this post is done I'll go sit on the couch and turn off the monitors for awhile. Other games I'm picking up on Day One include Professor Layton (um, this week, isn't it? :D) and ...uh, there was something else I wanted to pick up, I think...

Another game I picked up rather fast was The Gunstringer, a Kinect title where you hold up a marionette with one hand while shooting enemies with the other. What really caught my attention was the storyline, narrated like a play on a stage and heavy-handed with humour. The fact that Fruit Ninja Kinect was included as a pack-in was a nice bonus for Christine, too. :)

Christine and I have a very small amount of TV shows that we watch together, mainly because we have quite different tastes. However, when it comes to sitcoms, there's a few we really like - 30 Rock, Big Bang Theory (thank you Kevin for introducing us to that!), The Office, and as of a couple of years ago, NBC's Community. The third season started recently, but as Christine discovered in interviews, it's gotten a little darker this season than the other seasons. There were a couple of episodes that were pretty bad so far, but they really redeemed themselves with the latest episode, which is Troy and Abed's new apartment. (To my Canadian Friends, I'm sorry, but NBC doesn't let us watch stuff up here. Instead, let's go download it from this site. ^^ You don't need to download any software, click choose a source, then click the link that follows "Proceed to" to download it from MegaUpload or whatever file-sharing website they're using.)

Abed is by far my favourite character. He's got this birdlike inquisitiveness of the world about him, and yet, he's totally geeky, thinks the world is a TV show and that the study group has "wacky antics", comparing them to specific Tropes, even going so far as to compare one episode to a bottle episode before the rest of the cast realized it. There are small snippets of him cosplaying as The Cape. He'll spout random gibberish so quickly it may even take a moment for you to realize he made reference to something obscure. Then there was the Christmas Special...

The thing is, some of the characters in Community are not that interesting, and they're thankfully not the primary seven (!) cast members. When they started focusing on the secondary characters such as Starburns or Chang in this season, it's not that funny (especially if the entire episode is dedicated to them, they're a bit-part player). However, the geek in me loves Abed and Troy episodes because they work so well together, such as the Hallowe'en episode where Abed's costume is The Alien and Troy wears the Exosuit.

The first episode of this season has Abed freaking out that Cougartown is being held back for a mid-season premiere, so Britta finds the British version that the show was based on, which was a six-episode series ("Cougarton Abbey") where it looks like an upscale and high-class - and entirely unapproachable - Coronation Street. The show ends after the sixth episode, and with Abed mainlining the series in a day, returns to his freaking-out state, whereupon Britta brings out a British Sci-Fi show that has been on since 1962.

I knew the show the minute they said "Sci-Fi" and "1962".

Stepping out of a red phonebox onto a barren landscape, the constable wonders where they are. The Inspector quips "Not where... when."
To which they then discover... Blorgons!

E-RAD-I-CATE!
To which Abed then hails this show as the best he has ever seen in his entire life, and he snaps out of his funk. :D

Anyhow, let me get back to this current episode. I won't go into too many details, but at one point in the episode, a die is rolled and Abed spouts that "you are now creating six different timelines". We then visit all six timelines. Needless to say, the show might have fallen off partially for a couple of episodes, but this one brought the series right back on-track and I would definitely suggest watching it.

(Also, props go to this site for explaining how to capture video frames for this post. :P)

Oh, man, I need to watch more Community; I haven't seen it in ages! Although yeah, I watch it almost entirely for Troy and Abed too XD; (I should catch up on 30 Rock, too...)

I kinda realized that all the shows we're watching are on NBC - 30 Rock, The Office, and Community. I wonder if they ever share writers. ^^

I wonder! I really have no idea how these things usually work... although I get the feeling that if writers move between shows, they would move between networks too...

"Inspector Spacetime", I love it :) Somewhat ironically, I actually like that fake logo rather a lot more than the one for the real programme...

I had the same issues with the Portal 2 commentary - I had expected it to be really interesting, but it started off badly with that Australian fellow talking about how many splines had to be reticulated to create the crumbling room (though he saved it at the end with the detail that you're actually moving about somewhere off-screen with your viewpoint projected into the room, so that you can't hit anything you're not supposed to) and it was very sparse throughout, perhaps because of them using ideas for longer rather than having to feel their way and introduce new obstacles around every corner like in the first game.

I guess that the second game does seem to have the same amount of "commentary nodes" as the first ... I haven't tried the Co-Op Commentary levels yet, but I've been told that you can easily just "tab" through all the points. I almost kinda just want to flash through them all!

Yes, I really liked that first little factoid that we weren't actually in the room, too!

Also, oddly enough, Twisted Pixel's The Gunstringer has an unlockable commentary track by Rooster Teeth (the Red vs Blue guys). Again, I haven't unlocked it yet, but I have to wonder if the commentary is continuous or just spotty.

I am SO looking forward to it! I'll be torn between finishing Flower, Sun, and Rain, starting Solatorobo, or starting Layton or Layton's London Life...

SO MANY GAMES!
