Alright, so it's been a week of working at COBS so far. Let's do a little run-through on what I've been up to. I've been spending my first day off sitting down and keeping my back straight, as I appear to have made my lower back angry again. As such, I'm definitely trying to learn how to do squats more than kneeling, and considering all the requests for sweet stuff (which are located in those cupboards at the front), there's plenty of bending over. I also have to not twist my waist when I mop at the end of the day.
After my induction, I discovered that it takes me roughly an hour through traffic (and bad roads) to get to the Bloor West Village location. I decided to try the TTC, as parking in the area was $6 and a TTC trip was also $3 each way, and discovered it takes exactly the same amount of time (1 hour, 5 minutes) so I've decided to start commuting down to work. It's kinda crazy that I've gone back to commuting, but at the same time, it gives me 2 hours a day to actually read a book or play DS games, and I don't have to worry about my car being downtown. As such, I've gone through half of Reality Is Broken
and finally finished AGAIN. (
bridgeportcat, you were right - it wasn't a very satisfying ending, but it was a nice twist uncovering Providence.) I also have ordered a cheap MP3 player so that I can listen to podcasts on the way to work. That's the only thing I was missing from my car experience, really - the podcasts. My first MP3 player, and the memory card costs more than the player itself. :P
Near the beginning of the week, trying to work their cash register was very difficult. It's intuitive - as long as you know where all the different breads are grouped together. Once you get the hang of that, everything else is simple. I did manage to differentiate all the different breads after a week (some look quite similar, but there are tiny differences to determine what you're looking at), now all I need is a little cheat-sheet to figure out what's in each bread and what I should recommend for people's meals. :)
(If you get the chance, get a Cinnamon Loaf and make French Toast with it. DELICIOUS.)
I've also dealt with a little bit of the baking. I "knocked-out" some breads that were prepared earlier in the day (which involves me literally slamming the bread tins on a table to knock them out and let them cool, very stress-relieving) and made a batch of spinach-feta croissants from start to finish. :)
In terms of what I ate during the week, I've only been eating a decent breakfast at 9/10am and then having something around 5/6pm when I've been working (and most cases, it was a sandwich or a sub!). I figure I'm eating less but I'm definitely working much harder (physically) than I ever did at Bell, so I'm hoping that I'll drop a few pounds, despite that all I'm eating at work is bread-related products. ^^
Considering how green I am with working in a Bakery, Laura is definitely letting me in on how the place works. I've learned how to balance the daily sales, make bank deposits, and generally see how the place operates daily. On Sunday, Laura had asked if I was comfortable with 'directing' on Monday (making decisions on what needs to be done), but someone ended up calling in sick and it was a dead day, customer-wise. (As such, the charity got a great amount of bread last night.) Maybe sometime this coming week, but it seems relatively straight-forward. I wonder how much more of the business I don't know just yet. :)
The only thing I'm a little concerned about is where I'm going after next week. I have an idea that I'll be going to The Beaches location, but right now I haven't got any confirmation on that. I figure I'll call Mark (the West End Manager) on Thursday to get that sorted out, maybe I'll have an answer when I go in on Thursday when I actually work with the manager of the Bloor West Village location (she was on vacation for this past week). But after a week there, I can tell that they like working with me, and it would be a shame to disappear so quickly. They're a great training location. ^^

Linkdump! Here's what's been floating in my tabs for the past little while.
- You may notice a slight change to my icon now. I had to find a way to get it under 40kb, but I like its subtleness. :)
- I was linked to a remix of the classic Escape from the City tune, from Sonic Generations. Back in the days of the Dreamcast, when we didn't have the internet to share MP3s as fast as we do now, Dave once brought over his DC and we recorded the audio from it directly into my computer so I had a perfect copy of Live and Learn and Open Your Heart. This remix sounds pretty good! I'm still wondering if the game will be any good, but I do like what I'm seeing with the flip back-and-forth between 3D and 2D. Still haven't even played Sonic Colors yet!
- Here's a Photo Gallery taken from "Weird Al" Yankovic's Perform This Way music video. The meat outfit is preposterous (despite me not seeing it in the collection).
- Why does Missy like tummyrubs SO MUCH?
- A little while ago, I had been wondering about the old 'bots I used to have as toys when I was a kid - most memorable were Dingbot and Spotbot. I also had Flipbot and Hootbot, but I didn't remember that I had those until I came across them on The Old Robots site. I kinda want them again to savour them. They didn't do much (Dingbot ran into walls, Flipbot flipped, Hootbot... hooted) but they were totally entertaining to me. Heck, I bet to find and collect them now, they would cost as much as an EMA would cost, but those seem to be hard to find, too - well, aside from eBay.
- Mayor Crushes a car parked in the bike lane with a tank. It was a publicity stunt, but it should be done here-- oh wait, bike lanes are being removed from Toronto streets, right? ...nevermind.
- I'll admit it, I teared-up a bit watching this RoboGull flying around the TED Auditorium. Maybe at some point in my lifetime I'll be able to actually fly like a bird. (thanks to
ravenworks for passing that along via Twitter!)
- This is ancient news, but a nutrition professor went on a Twinkie Diet and counted calories, and managed to lose 27 pounds in 2 months. Not that I would want to go on a Twinkie diet - I probably couldn't have just Twinkies - but see above on what my eating habits have been recently. I think I might be able to lose a few pounds just with the physical workout I get at work these days. :)
- It's August already (!), and this means that the artist running 31 Days of Zero Suit Samus has finished their art project. I'm tempted to pick up a pair of prints because I just think they look adorable - namely, the Master of Pie and Rainy Days pictures.
- While I'm on the subject of artwork, go check out Christine's Artwork page. She just finished up a grand work, Still Life With The Wrappers On, which I'm still fascinated by.
- Suda51's at it again -- now that Shadows of the Damned is out, and his announced SDatcher (pronounce it "Su-Da-Cha" and you'll get the pun) radio drama has been announced, Grasshopper has announced something else - Lollipop Chainsaw. Oh, Suda51, you are a strange strange man and this is why I enjoy your works so much. XD (oh look, there's a website for it too - LollipopChainsaw.com. XD

Oh, as an aside, now that LJ seems to be back on a fairly even keel, if anyone is still having troubles loading my Comments page from their Friends page (and getting the creepy-ass goat in the process), let me know and I'll submit a... ticket or something to LJ's community helpers.

Should I try unfriending you and then refriending you?
Also, I want spinach-feta croissants :O

Everything is so tasty. It's kinda overwhelming, and eventually I figure I will have tried everything just so I know what they all taste like. Then I will become that fat-rat icon itself. They have awesome Pizza Rolls too. :9
I hear that COBS had tried to get into the States (probably in Washington State, since that's close to Vancouver, where they originated here), but they all closed down. I wonder what happened. :(

Sad to hear COBS didn't make it in the States... probably too much competition from places like Panera and such? I think PEETS and Starbucks competition in WA probably didn't help either :/

It's strange that I have so much nostalgia for things that are so inconvenient - I have fond memories of setting up a video cassette recorder, stood on its end, with cables from it to the computer so that I could record background music that had been taped from games. Would I want to do that now? No!
It's really wonderful to see you doing something that you enjoy :)

I remember having a cassette tape full of nothing but music from Ninja Gaiden and Paradroid (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeRGQ0tHYsc). Seeing that I was revisiting some older entries, I feel that I have to say that it's no Rad Gravity or FAROUT but it's pretty much in the "random bleeps" category.
As long as I can keep my back in good shape, I think I'll do fine here :D
