Probably not a good idea to read through this if you don't want to spoil yourself. Though, I'm just gonna be rambling and it may not make a lot of sense - unless of course, you're playing it, and you know where my future lies and you want to see how hot/cold I am (I'm looking at you, [livejournal.com profile] woekitten ;P).

So I'm "six hours" (game time) in, and I've been trying to figure out this "Nonary Game" for the past few days.

The concept behind the game is that 9 Persons are locked in a strange place, being run by a character just named "Zero", and these 9 persons have a watch on their wrist with a specific number (from one to nine). There are doors located around the game with a single number on them. No fewer than three and no more than five people can enter these rooms at the same time, and to keep this in-check, they scan their bracelets at a "RED", and the Digital Root of their combined numbers must equal the number on the door.

A Digital Root is the sum of the individual numbers worked down to a single digit (the number in the tens place plus the number in the ones place), so Persons 2, 4, and 9 would have a Digital Root of 6 (2+4+9=15, 1+5=6).

Zero issues the challenge that they are given 9 hours to find a way out - "Seek a door with the number 9."

I did a Google search for "Nonary Game" just to figure out if this was some kind of already-established game, and well, no - every result came back to 999. So, I decided to close the tab and not spoil myself further - and since I saw there's a TVTropes page dedicated to 999, I realized I could seriously spoil myself if I started snooping in there.

One of my thoughts on the Nonary Game is that Zero is a part of the game, too. It's been noted that even at the endgame, when they find Door 9, they're still going to have to make a Digital Root of 9 since that's how the game is played. But at the same time, no more than 5 people can go through a door, so that means at least 4 people will die... (and there's already been two deaths...)

I'm not sure if Zero is one of the Persons, but if you were to give him an active playing part with the number 0 (as everyone else gave themselves codenames), having to use the REDs to open doors, it means he could enter any of the rooms with any of the people, since he doesn't affect the Digital Root (as long as there isn't 5 people, however, which could mean it would be an even more grim ending).

The storytelling is superb. I have to applaud Aksys games for the translation, it flows smoothly and feels like a well-written horror novel. The graphical touches and animation is minimal, but it's enough to feel immersive. (I wonder if "Nonary Game" is a horrible translation or not, maybe I'll find out eventually...)

I'll still be trying to figure out this "Nonary Game" for quite a while, since apparently there are multiple endings, based on my decisions throughout the game.

And for those who weren't interested (or anyone who wanted to see a short film), here's an awesome animated short, "One Rat Short":
